The Law
God giving the Law to Moses marks the climax of the book of Exodus. Everything that came before was preparing the Israelites for that moment, and everything that followed flowed from it. The Law was not just a list of rules; it was a revelation of God’s heart and holiness. It established a way for His people to live in fellowship with Him, guided by His divine standard. From the very beginning, God desired relationship, not mere compliance. He gave humanity the gift of choice and the opportunity to walk authentically with Him. Without the Law, there would be no clear standard, no sense of consequence, and no real validation of free will.
Through the Law, God showed Israel how to live before Him and how to restore what was lost in the Garden of Eden. Sin had broken communion with God, but His Law offered a way back into fellowship. God specializes in finding wanderers and transforming them into worshippers. He does not simply call us out of the wilderness; He calls us into worship. And the only way to truly worship God is through obedience. Scripture reminds us that true worshippers worship in spirit and in truth, meaning that our hearts and our actions must align with His will.
Today, many of us hold a higher standard for our lifestyle than for our salvation. Yet grace calls us to live differently. Once we have received grace, our response should not be to look back longingly at Egypt, at the life we left behind, but to walk forward in obedience. Obedience does not earn salvation, but it is what sustains sanctification.
Jesus Christ fulfilled every letter of the Law, embodying its perfection in human form. When we place our trust in Him, He writes that perfect Law on our hearts. Through His grace, we receive what we could never accomplish through our own effort. What the Law revealed as impossible, Jesus made possible—transforming us from dead in sin to alive in Him.
Getting Started
- When you think about rules or laws, do you tend to see them as restrictive or protective?
- What does worship look like for you outside of church?
Let’s Get Personal
- Can you think of a season when you felt like a wanderer, and how God led you back to Him?
- How has your understanding of grace changed as you’ve grown in your faith?
- Is there a habit, relationship, or mindset God might be asking you to surrender in this season as an act of obedience?
Take the Next Step
- How can you remind yourself this week that worship is not just about music or lifting your hands, but about the posture of your heart and the way you live each day?
- Pray and ask God to help you see obedience as an expression of love, not obligation.
- Want to dig deeper? Take a look at the following passages: Exodus 20:3-17; Genesis 2:16-17; 1 John 1:3-6; John 4:23; 1 Samuel 15:22; Romans 12:1; Romans 7:12; 1 Timothy 1:8; Ephesians 6:1; Matthew 5:20-22; Jeremiah 31:33; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Philippians 2:12; Galatians 2:20.
